ResumeMD: Your Resume, Written in Markdown

Keeping a resume up to date shouldn’t feel harder than maintaining a codebase, yet for many developers it does. Between duplicated files, broken formatting, and edits scattered across different tools, updating a resume often becomes a frustrating, manual process. That frustration is what led me to build ResumeMD, a small, open-source tool that lets you write and manage your resume using Markdown, version it with Git, and focus on content instead of fighting layouts.

As developers, we already rely on tools that solve these problems in our daily work: plain text files, version control, and simple, predictable workflows. But when it comes to resumes, we often fall back to word processors or online builders that don’t fit that mindset. ResumeMD was born from the idea that a resume should be treated like code: easy to edit, easy to track, and easy to evolve over time.

The core idea behind ResumeMD is simple: separate content from presentation. Your resume lives as a Markdown file that contains only structured, readable information; experience, skills, projects, and education, without worrying about fonts, spacing, or layout details.

That Markdown file becomes the single source of truth. From there, ResumeMD takes care of turning your content into a clean, professional resume. Updating or tailoring your resume becomes a matter of editing text, not redesigning a document.

Trade-offs and Limitations

ResumeMD is intentionally opinionated. It prioritizes content and workflow over visual flexibility. If you want pixel-perfect control or highly customized layouts, traditional design tools may be a better fit.

That trade-off is deliberate: by limiting complexity, ResumeMD stays easy to maintain, easy to extend, and easy to reason about, much like good software.

Open Source and What’s Next

ResumeMD is fully open source, and the repository is available on GitHub. I built it to scratch a personal itch, but also to explore a better way of handling resumes as developers.

Future improvements may include better customization options, additional output formats, and workflow refinements based on real-world usage and feedback.
